He walked over to Walter and smiled. It was the first time I'd really looked at Walter since this whole thing started and I was shocked to see how much fear was in his eyes. It was like he was staring at the devil himself.
"I've been waiting a long time to get my hands on you," Marlowe said to him, "haven't I, Walter? And, we're going to have some fun, aren't we? Just me and you. Alone in a room. With some very, very sharp objects.
"Okay," Marlowe span back around and clapped his hands together, "I accept your deal, Zoe Frost. You have twenty-four hours to bring me the Key. At which point, if you fail to do so, I will start killing your friends for real. And this time, it won't be a little light tickling with an iron bar, if you know what I mean?"
If what he did to Blake was a little light tickling, I didn't want to find out what he considered rough.
Although, I guess I already knew.

“Twenty-four hours,” I said. “But that’s not enough time!”
“Tough shit,” Marlowe said. "Unless you’d rather–”
"No!" I said. “Tomorrow is fine.”
"Good," he said, "but, as much as I trust you to stick to your word, I am going to have to take a hostage, too."
"Fine," I said, trying to think fast, "take Walter, if you have to. He'll be sorely missed. But if it puts your mind at ease, then I guess it just has to be done."
Marlowe tilted his head back and let out a huge guffaw.
"Oh, dear, you are a funny one," he said, taking a handkerchief out of his jacket pocket and wiping his eyes, "no, I need someone you actually care about. Not some stinking, wretched beast like Walter.
"Now, tell me, Zoe Frost. Before I change my mind about this whole deal and just kill you all right now. Who in this room do you love the most?"
I looked at Blake. A bloody, broken mess. And I wanted to cry.
Then I looked at Dorian. On the floor. Totally unconscious. Possibly dead.
There was for sure no way of telling if he would ever wake up again.
A man who had grown up best friends with my father. In the early nineteenth century.
And then I looked over at Courtney. And I knew I loved her the most.
She was like a sister to me. I'd do anything for her. Which meant I had to keep her safe.
She'd already lost so much.
"Blake," I said, trying to make it sound like the most difficult decision I had ever had to make, "I love Blake the most."
Marlowe shook his head.
I'd known he'd see through my lie, but I had to try it anyway.
"Just like your father," he said, "he always underestimated me, too. But you'll learn. You'll all learn."
