From Chapter 3:
Rikkin
Darkness. That was all he saw until a small light sparked to life some distance away. Rikkin got onto his shaky feet and leaned against the stone wall. He had a hard time deciphering his own thoughts. He shook his head as his legs nearly gave out beneath him. Thanks to the nearby wall, he had something to hold on to while he got his bearings.
His eyes adjusted slowly until he could see the stone clearly. He groaned. Rikkin’s head felt like it was splitting in two.
“What the heck was in that drink?” he asked himself aloud.
A sound of trickling water echoed through the stone hall. Rikkin licked his dry lips and looked toward the light once more.
“Water must be ahead.”
He stepped forward cautiously. His boot hit the ground, and he put weight on it to test his strength. After he was sure he wouldn’t find himself face-first on the ground, he let go of the wall. Step by step, he walked toward the light. Little did he know he would soon face his first test.
A large archway of stone gave way to a lush oasis within the mountain. Several enormous trees blocked the sun from view. Rocks were scattered across the main floor with moss as thick as leather on their surface. Gorgeous flowers grew around the small stream. The view took his breath away and he couldn’t stop gaping. It was hard to believe something so rare as this could exist in the shadows of rocks. But then, anything was possible. Rikkin remembered his first trek through Tõrrin. The dwarves had an uncanny way of making the inside of a mountain look like lush forests.
He stood there in the shade of a grand oak tree and took a deep breath. The taste of earth was on his tongue. Rikkin sat on top of a nearby rock and looked out at the flowing water. Something with great strength had carved a giant mass of stone out of the mountainside. Beneath it, a ridge stuck out several feet over the water, creating something like a bridge. Claw marks marred its sides. Rikkin had the sense to stay away from it because something about it didn’t sit well in his gut. The sense that he wasn’t alone consumed him. His body remained alert, but he was careful not to give off any indication that he knew someone else was there.
Rikkin got to his feet and took a turn around the small space. The feeling of eyes on his back sent shivers up his spine. His fingers itched to unsheathe his sword. But he kept his hand steady on the hilt and had his magic at the ready.
It better not be Roülle who is watching me. He would do something like this—stand in the shadows to scare the crud out of me the second I let my guard down.
Rikkin turned toward the entrance he had come through and started toward it when a groan filled the air. Rikkin froze. He looked over his shoulder, but nothing was there. Another groan came, this time louder than the last. Goosebumps scattered across Rikkin’s back and up his arms. He clenched his teeth and stepped toward his exit to freedom. He didn’t welcome the darkness, but getting away from a potential enemy was better.
“I see you.”
Rikkin froze at the words spoken loudly throughout the cavern. He turned every way imaginable to find the source. The thought never occurred to him to look upward.
“That’s funny because I don’t see you,” Rikkin replied.
A growl filled the room. Rikkin stood ramrod straight. It felt like there was someone breathing down his neck. But no one was there—at least no one he could see. Smoke filled his nostrils and his lungs gave way to coughing.
“What do you want?” Rikkin puffed.
“You are in my home, human. I believe I should ask that question.”
The words slurred together as the voice spoke. Rikkin had a feeling he wasn’t dealing with any run-of-the-mill creature. He wouldn’t know for sure what it was until he saw it with his own two eyes. This mountain could be hiding anything within its walls.
“I’m here under the protection of the GrandMaster.”
“Are you now?”
“Yes. I’m supposed to take my SwordMaster’s test today. Last thing I remember was drinking out of this bowl—some awful smelly stuff.”
“You don’t say?”
The voice grew louder the closer it got. Rikkin placed his hand on his sword and glared at his surroundings. Whatever this creature was, it would not take him by surprise. A clicking sound caught his attention, then a large swishing noise. It sounds like it is coming from above me. Rikkin turned and looked toward the ledge jutting out above the giant cave. Out of the darkness, large golden eyes stared down at him from the golden mask of a dragon. Rikkin gulped and felt the dragon fear grab hold of him. It wouldn’t help to fight it—dragons had that effect on people. He just had to distract his senses so that he wouldn’t end up as a meal for the oversized lizard with wings.
“Um. How long have you been there?” Rikkin asked through clenched teeth.
Amusement flashed in the dragon’s eyes. He ran his tongue over his massive teeth and grinned. Rikkin fought the urge to flinch at the size of the razor blades in the beast’s mouth. How easy would it be for him to gut me and rip me to shreds with those massive teeth?
