Every month, we announce a question that members can answer in their IWSG post. These questions may prompt you to share advice, insight, a personal experience or story. Include your answer to the question in your IWSG post or let it inspire your post if you are struggling with something to say.
Purpose: To share and encourage. Writers can express doubts and concerns without fear of appearing foolish or weak. Those who have been through the fire can offer assistance and guidance. It’s a safe haven for insecure writers of all kinds!
July 2 question - Is there a genre you haven't tried writing in yet that you really want to try? If so, do you plan on trying it?
A Story in the Works
With my writing I have stuck to the fantasy genres for most of it. I have written a young adult horror story that borderlines a dark fantasy in the modern world. The books range in adventure stories to some romance. I would have to say romance is my challenging genre. Any of it is hard for me to write, because what I read and how I write for a target audience.
I would have to say that I want to break off into other types of romance genres that feature different type of worlds with fantasy elements in it. One genre is MC romance. I have read I don’t know how many MC contemporary romances since my journey as a writer. They are really enjoyable. There were a few paranormal romance ones I liked, too. But I want to give it a go with one of my series I have in the works that I put on the back burner for a while.
Another big thing for me is writing in third person. All my fantasy books are in third person. I want to break out and try to write a romance in first person for once. Then I want to stay true to my target audience and try to not make it to rated R. I write mostly young adult and new adult books so that means I would like to keep it pretty clean.
The book I want to try this out on is my Predator of Darkness series. It is a new adult MC paranormal romance. Hoping to keep it with a cozy feel and paranormal MC feel to it. But the idea is to give readers something that isn’t completely smut. I love smut books don’t get me wrong, I just can’t write it. My writing comes out more for younger readers than anyone. Plus, I never wrote in first person so it will be a learning curve to find my voice.
Right now I am working on The Emerald Knight in my Tales of Tarza series. Once I finish it I plan to take a break from this series to write some of Predators of Darkness. I have a series set I have to write a book for but that is due in April 2026. So the plan is to spend a couple of months on Predators then switch to the new project. I don’t plan to release Predators until I have several books written or at least part of book 2 written. Don’t know how many books there will be in this series. But I am looking forward to finding out.
I also tend to write for the younger set. It's just how my voice comes out or maybe I never grew up. :)
ReplyDeleteYeah I try writing for older readers when I first started out. But a lot of my readers wished that I would take the smexy scenes out and leave it as a young adult genre. This way they could share them with there kidos since I touch on a lot of family values as such.
DeleteWriting for teens and such - yeah, better keep it PG13. (Not that they aren't exposed to R stuff, they just don't expect it from you.)
ReplyDeleteYeah I do plan to have sex scenes in my New Adult books but I am leaning towards fade to black with PG touching. I just don't have a vocabulary for the heated scenes that doesn't sound repetitive.
DeleteHi, Katie! I found your post very interesting, because I am not familiar with some of the sub genres of fantasy and romance you wrote about. I had to google MC Romance. Motorcycle Romance - I think that would be a lot of fun to read! A long time ago I was involved with a group of desert dirt bikers in Southern California and worked as a parts girl in a motorcycle shop. It's a fascinating world. But I was scared of motorcycles, and when my marriage ended, so did my motorcycle riding. 😂 Keep us posted at the IWSG about your book!
ReplyDeleteThat is so cool that you got to live that life. I'm assuming books aren't as fun as real life living the life style. Plus the books I read tend to be dark romance mixed with MC romance. This tends to be a work of fiction in its real form.
